My mom had to get up usually by five and go to work—she was a waitress at Denny’s—so she wasn’t around in the morning. I got to spend a lot more time with my dad, and my dad was a really big part of my life. He was a body man at a shop and when I was in kindergarten, because I would have half days, he would pick me and my brothers up and hang out with us for the afternoon. He would take me to work and let me do little tasks and I felt very special because I was allowed to work on cars with him.

Growing up in a lower middle class family was a really positive experience for me because I had really strong relationships with both my parents as opposed to just having a really close relationship with my mom and my dad being a distant figure, which I think is what happens with a lot of more structured middle class families.
